Gay Safe Sex

Safe Sex for Gay Men Escorts & Clients

The myth about Oral: This myth is that oral sex has no health risk and is completely safe without protection, it's not true! it is possible to transmit Syphilis, hepatitis A & B, gonorrhoea (had to check dictionary for that), warts and herpes through oral sex. The risk is lower than penetration (Significantly lower for HIV), this goes both ways giving and receiving, however performing oral sex on someone carries a bigger risk than receiving oral sex. Other factors play a role and increase the risk, such as having mouth sores, herpes, infections, a sore throat, bleeding gums or gum disease (See facts below).

Myth about Anal: Active/Top guys can't get HIV because they are fucking the other guy, Not true, it's irritating that active guys believe this (or choose to believe it) and it seems most guys do, the risk is certainly lower for the active partner, however it should not be ignored as if it was non-existent. Sex is about friction and friction causes tiny cuts and abrasions on the penis, the slit at the tip of the penis and friction scratches make it possible for the HIV virus to enter the body if the passive partner has HIV. The Anus bleeds excessively during anal sex, the tissue inside the anus will be bloody so this does make it possible, however less risky than being the receiver.

Rimming: Has a risk of passing on herpes and warts to the person performing it, it has little risk for the person receiving, however as with Oral sex (The blow job kind) infections on the mouth can increase the risk, dental damns can be used as condoms that are placed over the hole to cover the anus, between the anus and the mouth.

Getting tested: Unless you are in a relationship and you know that you are both only sexually active with each other, it is wise get checked at the clinic every 3 months, it takes that time for HIV to be detected in the blood, you need to backdate the results to show you were healthy three months ago. Example get tested January 1st 2008 when it's all clear it means you were completely healthy October 1st 2007, you would need to get tested April 1st 2008 to show you had no trace of HIV on January 1st 2008. If you are in a relationship it's important to remember you're sleeping with every partner that your partner has slept with and every partner that their ex partners have slept with too, if they had unprotected sex with their partners and they had unprotected sex with theirs... do the math; it's probably a high number.

Other Facts: Doctors in clinics estimate that the number of people with HIV/Aids could be up to 1 in 5 people! If they made it through the door to get tested (This is going by what a doctor at my clinic told me personally), putting that aside the number is much higher than any records show because there's only a small number of people that actually get tested. Avert estimates there are 31 million - 35 million (35,000,000) people living with HIV/AIDS Globally from 2008 records, around 3 million new cases were reported in 2008.

* The HPV Virus (Genital Warts) is estimated to effect 80% of all woman in America, yep 80%. In the UK, 75% of people (male and female) by the time they reach 25 years old already have the Genital Warts Virus (HPV). There are over 100 types of HPV, 60% cause warts on hands and feet and 40% are caused by sexual activity. There are 12 low risk types and 13 high risk types (I don't know what the rest are classed as). HPV is not harm full in itself, some types may be more visible which would not look pretty. It can however, lead on to very serious health issues, 70% of all Cervical Cancer in females is caused by the virus and in men it can cause Anal Cancer, in the US and UK a vaccine is given to teenage girls at school, more research is being carried out to provide a similar vaccine for boys as Anal Cancer being one of the most difficult to treat is caused by this Virus and the numbers are not known due to lack of research for the men effected.

* Gum disease effects 90% of the population, between 30% - 50% have periodontal gum disease which is the most harm full.

* Blood is the highest risk factor for contracting HIV. Blood carries significantly more of the HIV Virus than seman.  This is why there are documented cases of a HIV negative person being sexually active with their HIV positive partners and not contracting the virus. Such as the man who recently injected his wife with his blood and passed the virus to her, they did not know he had HIV until a check up was forced when the family emigrated, the wife stopped being sexually active with him when they found out, yet the Virus was not passed to his wife or children. Blood is known as being a far greater risk factor, however blood can be passed sexually during male and female intercourse and seman does contain large quantities of the HIV virus.

* Pulling out before ejaculation does Not protect either partner from STD's & STI's. If the top/active partner pulls out before ejaculating inside the bottom/passive partner the risk of HIV infection is lowered by 30% for the bottom guy being fucked, a 70% chance of infection would still be there. This is because pre-cum is thought to also contain the HIV virus but in less quantities (because there is usually less pre-cum than actual cum). That only goes for that STI, other STD's and STI's are transmitted through skin on skin contact, therefore pulling out before cumming will not protect against them.

To Sum Up: Use water based lubricants with latex condoms. What does Not work - baby oil, house hold creams, moisturisers (believe me some people think "a liquid is a liquid"), they deteriorate the latex in condoms and make it more likely to break, water based specially for anal intercourse lubricants are needed for safe sex. Use Extra Safe/Strong condoms for gay sex, the feather light and just ordinary condoms are designed for Vaginal intercourse, Male/Female penetration and can break too easily in Anal sex, Extra strong condoms are best for Male/Male sex. Don't Floss before performing oral sex as it greatly increases the risk of infection. Assume that whoever you are sleeping with is Lying, may sound bad but may also save your life, besides there is a scary amount of people running round having fun out there that have never set foot in a sexual health clinic and maybe never will. These people wouldn't know until they develop symptoms serious and obvious enough... So, do assume people are lying about the status of their sexual health or they are not aware of it, better to be suspicious of new partners until they get tested, than be seriously ill based on trust.

I know all this sounds a bit much, right? And I didn't write this claiming to be perfect 100% of the time, I can only claim to play by the rules around 99.6% of the times I've had sex. I think most people have "Slipped up" once or twice but it's about minimising risk to stay alive, healthy and vibrant, so I hope this is a useful guide.

Please see the Avert Website for more information the banner is also on my Links page. Avert is a charity I donate to regularly. I am grateful for my health and I intend to keep it in to a ripe old age, others are less fortunate so if you feel generous you can support their work too.

Thanks for such a great article. I have been guilty of being a lurker around blogs. I guess I always felt a little bit intimidated as I was basically a newbie and felt my thoughts didn't really matter. I have come around though recently and feel like I have something to contribute. *****************
